The Yard Manoeuvres

Reverse in a Straight Line
Parallel Parking - Important Rules and Assessment Criteria
Examiner Instructions and Requirements
The examiner will instruct you to execute the maneuver based on the following strict compliance criteria:
Starting Position: Stop with the front end of the vehicle immediately above or over the starting line.
Continuous Movement: Reverse the vehicle smoothly through the demarcated area without stopping.
Single Attempt: Complete the entire maneuver in a single, continuous attempt.
Boundary Clearance: Do not touch or cross any side boundary lines or markers.
Stopping Zone: Complete the reverse by stopping with the rear wheels of the vehicle within or beyond the designated 5-meter stopping zone.

Step-by-Step Driver Action Plan
Before moving, you must prepare the vehicle and secure your surroundings:
Select Gear: Depress the clutch and select reverse gear.
Find the Bite Point: Standardize your control by obtaining clutch control (the bite point) to ensure the vehicle does not roll forward.
Full Observation: Conduct a thorough 360-degree check (checking all mirrors and blind spots) to ensure the environment is completely clear before moving.
Execute: Release the handbrake and smoothly back up into the zone following the examiner's criteria above.
  • Keep the vehicle moving in a straight line by making small steering corrections when necessary.
  • Maintain a safe distance from the side boundary lines and do not allow the vehicle to touch or cross them.
  • Continue reversing under full control until reaching the designated stopping point.
  • Stop smoothly where indicated.
  • Apply the parking brake.
  • Select neutral (or Park (P) for automatic transmission vehicles).
  • Release the clutch pedal, if applicable.
Tip: Reverse at walking pace and continue checking your mirrors and surroundings regularly.
Slow, controlled movements make it easier to keep the vehicle straight and avoid touching the boundary lines.
