Time limits for completing the test
In South Africa, the K53 driving licence test time limits are generally as follows:
Light and Heavy Motor Vehicles
Yard Test
You have:
20 minutes
(including the pre-trip vehicle inspection).
There is also a small grace period of up to 59 seconds at some testing centres.
If you pass the yard test, you then proceed to the road test.
Motorcycles
There are no fixed overall time limits for motorcycles
However, candidates are still expected to complete all manoeuvres and test sections efficiently and safely.
Important Failure Rule
You may fail immediately if:
- You exceed the time limit
- Accumulate too many penalty points
- Commit an "immediate fail" action such as:
Rolling
Hitting poles
Crossing boundary lines
Dangerous driving
Ignoring traffic rules
How the Scoring Works
The K53 driving test isn't just about "passing or failing",it is a points-based system.
Every mistake you make carries a "Penalty Point" value.
The goal is to keep your total points below the allowed limit for each section.
1. The Penalty Point System
Think of penalty points like a "budget." You start with 0 points, and you want to stay as close to zero as possible
Minor Mistakes: (e.g., forgetting a blind spot check) = 5 points.
Moderate Mistakes: (e.g., touching a line while parking) = Points vary by section.
Immediate Fail: Certain actions result in an instant fail, regardless of your score (e.g., hitting a curb or violating a traffic light).
2. Allowance Thresholds
Each part of the test has its own "Allowance." If you exceed these numbers, you will fail that section:
Test Section Allowed Penalty Points
Yard Test (Parking) 50 Points
Road Test (Driving) 8 per Minute
3. How the Examiner Scores You
The examiner uses a standardized Score Sheet. They will observe your:
Observations: Are you checking your mirrors and blind spots every time?
Vehicle Control: Are you smooth with the clutch and steering?
Rules of the Road: Are you following the Side Road Junction rules and speed limits etc? .
