Driving Off
Moving Off (Driver Procedure) Procedure
1. Obey all road traffic signs, signals, rules, and road markings.
2. Check the rear-view mirror(s) and the appropriate blind spot, if applicable.
3. Signal your intention, if applicable.
4. Ensure there is clear space beyond any intersection before entering it.
5. Ensure the intersection itself is clear before you enter it. 6. Before moving off, confirm there is a safe clear space (approximately 4 to 5 metres) behind any vehicle ahead of you.
7. Select the appropriate gear.
8. Obtain clutch control (manual transmission vehicles).
9. Check mirrors and both blind spots. Steps 7, 8, and 9 may be completed in one smooth, continuous movement.
10.Release the parking brake, if applicable.
11.Move off safely.
12.On a motorcycle, maintain balance and place both feet on the front foot-pegs as soon as the motorcycle begins to move. 13.Accelerate as necessary.
14.Cancel the signal, if applicable.
Notes
If the vehicle rolls during moving off, you will fail and the test will be discontinued.
On a motorcycle, keep the vehicle stationary by applying the rear brake when required.
Observation and gear selection may be done simultaneously where appropriate.
On a motorcycle, always apply the front brake before releasing the rear brake and selecting a gear.
Full observation must be completed before moving off, including in stop-start traffic conditions.
During moving off, do not allow the wheels to spin. If this occurs, penalty points will be issued.
On a motorcycle, touching a boundary line with a foot after moving off will result in penalties.
