The Yard Manoeuvres

Before you are allowed to drive on public roads for your practical road test, you must successfully complete the yard test manoeuvres.
These exercises are designed to assess your ability to control and handle the vehicle safely and accurately in a controlled environment.
During the yard test, you will be evaluated on essential driving skills, including:

Reversing the vehicle safely and accurately

Parking correctly within designated areas

Moving off smoothly and safely on an incline (hill start)

Turning the vehicle around in the road using the correct procedure
These manoeuvres demonstrate your understanding of vehicle control, observation, and safe driving practices, ensuring that you are prepared to progress to the on-road portion of the driving test.

Before commencing the yard test manoeuvres, the examiner will explain the procedures, requirements, and rules that apply during the assessment. It is important to listen carefully and ensure that you understand what is expected of you.

• The full yard test (the pre-trip inspection as well as the manoeuvres) must be completed within 20 minutes and 59 seconds (the prescribed time limit).
  
• Stopping the vehicle will be permitted at any stage during some of the manoeuvres.
  
• You must perform the K53 observation procedure and give the correct signals in the same way as would be necessary on a public road.
  
• You do not need to wear a seatbelt during the yard test manoeuvres.
  
• If the test is terminated at any stage, you will need to repeat the full test at another time.
  
• All rules of the road, road traffic signs, signals, and road surface markings must be obeyed during the yard test.
  
• You are not permitted to touch any obstacles or mount a kerb during any of the manoeuvres. If you do so, you will fail, and the test will be discontinued.
  
• Uncontrolled or dangerous actions will not be permitted.
  
• The push-and-pull method of steering is not required during the yard test manoeuvres.
  
• You may ask the examiner any questions regarding the above points.
  
  Before each yard test manoeuvre, the examiner will direct you to the correct starting position.
  Once you are in position, you will be instructed to apply the parking brake, select neutral, and cancel any active turn signals where applicable.
  While the vehicle is stationary and before the manoeuvre begins, the examiner will explain the specific requirements and objectives of the manoeuvre.
  It is important to listen carefully to these instructions and ensure that you fully understand what is expected of you before proceeding.
  If you are unsure about any aspect of the manoeuvre, you may ask the examiner for clarification before starting.
  Once instructed to begin, you should carry out the manoeuvre safely, accurately, and in accordance with K53 driving principles.
