Clutch Control
Using the Clutch
Full Engagement:
Depress the clutch pedal (or pull in the clutch lever) completely.
Control:
Successfully obtain clutch control at the friction point when preparing to move.
No Unjustified Slipping:
Avoid unnecessary or prolonged slipping of the clutch.
No Riding:
Avoid riding the clutch pedal or lever while the vehicle is in motion.
No Coasting:
Avoid unjustified coasting (moving while the clutch is depressed or the vehicle is in neutral).
Clearance:
Remove your foot (or hand) completely from the clutch control at all times, except when changing gears, stopping, or during legally justified moments of slipping, riding, or coasting.
Smooth Stopping:
Disengage the clutch fully just before the vehicle comes to a complete standstill to prevent the engine from labouring, shuddering, or stalling.
Important K53 Test Notes
Braking Sequence: When bringing the vehicle to a stop, you must apply the footbrake before depressing the clutch to avoid a penalty for coasting.
Exceptions:
This sequence is not required when navigating stop-start traffic or when executing a stop on an incline.
Resting Control:
Your foot or hand must never rest on the clutch pedal or lever while the engine is running, except when handling heavy, stop-start traffic.
⚠️ Critical Test Penalty Warning
Continuous riding of the clutch during your practical road test, or failing to remove your foot/hand completely from the clutch control after stopping and selecting neutral, will result in recurring penalty points accumulated every 5 to 8 seconds.
