Starting and Stopping the Engine
Once you have completed your pre-trip inspection, the examiner will instruct you to start the engine.Both starting and shutting down the motorcycle require an exact sequence of actions to avoid losing points.
Part 1: Starting the Engine Procedure.
Follow these 8 steps in precise order to start the motorcycle safely:
1.Turn on the Fuel Tap
If applicable.Turn the fuel tap/valve to the ON position (mostly applicable to older or carbureted motorcycles).
2.Ignition Switch ON
Power the dash.
Turn the ignition key to the ON position.
Verify that the dashboard illuminates and check the operation of any warning lights and meters.
3.Ensure Neutral
Check for the green light.
Ensure the transmission is in Neutral.
Confirm this by checking that the green "N" warning light is illuminated on the instrument cluster.
4.Kill Switch to RUN.
Enable power.
Switch the engine "kill" switch to the RUN or ON position.
5.Operate the Choke.
Cold starts only.
Operate the choke lever if applicable (usually required for a cold engine on carbureted models).
6.Engage the Starter.
Fire it up.
Start the engine by pressing the electric START button or by using the kick-start lever.
7.Release Starter.
Post-start check.
Release the starter button immediately once the engine fires, or ensure the kick-start lever returns smoothly back to its rest position.
8.Cancel Choke.
Smooth idling.
Cancel the choke operation once the engine is idling smoothly and reaching operating temperature (if applicable).
K53 Test Tip: Attempting to start the motorcycle while it is in gear without pulling in the clutch will cause the bike to lurch forward, resulting in an immediate fail.
Always double check that neutral light!
Part 2: Stopping the Engine Procedure.
When your test or a specific maneuver is complete, you must shut down the motorcycle using this exact sequence:
1.Switch Off Accessories.
Power down electricals.
Turn off all electrical accessories, including the headlights and spotlights.
2.Use the KILL Switch.
Cut the motor.
Stop the engine by flipping the engine "KILL" switch to the OFF position.
3.Ignition Key OFF.
Isolate power.
Turn the ignition key to the OFF position to entirely cut power to the instrument panel and electrical system.
4.Turn off Fuel Tap.
If applicable.Turn the fuel valve/tap to the OFF position to prevent fuel leaks or flooding.
5.Select First Gear.
Park safely.
Engage First Gear. This is highly important when parking or stopping on an incline, as it acts as a parking brake to keep the motorcycle from rolling.
