A guarded level crossing is a railway crossing controlled by warning devices such as boom gates, barriers, flashing lights, bells, or railway personnel.
These safety measures are designed to warn road users of approaching trains and to prevent vehicles from crossing when it is unsafe to do so.

Driving Procedure for a Guarded Level Crossing

1: Check the Rear-View Mirror.
Before slowing down, check your rear-view mirror to assess traffic conditions behind you. This helps ensure that you can reduce speed safely without creating a hazard for following vehicles.

2: Observe for Rail Traffic
As you approach the level crossing, look to the right and then to the left along the railway line for:

  • Approaching trains.
  • Railway maintenance vehicles.
  • Warning lights or signals.
  • Railway personnel controlling traffic.
  • Lowering or lowered boom gates.

    3. Reduce Speed if Necessary
    Ease off the accelerator and apply the brakes smoothly if required. Always adjust your speed according to:
  • Traffic conditions.
  • Weather and visibility conditions.
  • Road surface conditions.

    4. Select an Appropriate Gear
    If your speed decreases significantly, select a lower gear to maintain better vehicle control and be prepared to stop if necessary.

    5. Proceed Only if Safe
    Continue towards the crossing only when:
  • The crossing is clear.
  • Warning lights are not flashing.
  • Railway personnel indicate that it is safe to proceed.

    6. Stop When Required
    You must stop if:
  • A stop sign is present.
  • Warning lights are flashing.
  • Boom gates are lowered or are in the process of lowering.
  • A railway official instructs you to stop.
  • A train is approaching.

    7. Secure the Vehicle if Stationary
    If you need to remain stopped for an extended period:
  • Apply the parking brake where appropriate.
  • Keep the vehicle under control at all times.

    8. Select Neutral or Park if Necessary
    If the stop is prolonged:
  • Manual transmission vehicles may be placed in Neutral.
  • Automatic transmission vehicles may be placed in Park (P) when appropriate.

    9. Prepare to Move Off
    Before moving again, select the correct gear for the intended speed and traffic conditions.

    10. Perform a 360-Degree Observation
    Conduct a full observation around the vehicle by:
  • Looking ahead.
  • Checking all mirrors.
  • Checking blind spots where necessary.
  • Monitoring pedestrians and other road users.

    11. Release the Parking Brake
    Release the parking brake smoothly while maintaining full control of the vehicle.

    12. Move Off Safely
    Proceed only when:
  • The crossing is clear.
  • Cross the tracks without stopping or changing gears.
  • Continue to monitor the road environment after clearing the crossing.
