Pre-Trip Inspection Procedure.  Light and Heavy Motor Vehicles

During the pre-trip inspection, you are required to demonstrate that the vehicle is roadworthy and safe to operate.
The inspection should be carried out carefully and systematically while clearly indicating the components being checked to the examiner. The following procedure applies to both light and heavy motor vehicles:

1. Check Under the Vehicle
Inspect underneath the vehicle for:

• fluid leaks,
• oil spills,
• or any obstructions that may affect safe operation.
  
  2. Check Doors and Windows
  
• Unlock all doors.
  
• Ensure that all door opening mechanisms function correctly.
  
• Check that window winders or controls operate properly.
  
  3. Check Seat Belts
  Ensure that:
  
• all seat belts are secure,
  
• undamaged,
  
• and functioning correctly.
  
  4. Begin the Inspection Correctly
  Start the inspection at the right front side of the vehicle and continue systematically around the vehicle while checking all required components.
  Glass, Lights and Fittings
  Inspect all glass and plastic fittings to ensure they are:
  
• clean,
  
• secure,
  
• and free from damage.
  This includes:
• headlights,
  
• lenses,
  
• indicators,
  
• reflectors,
  
• mirrors,
  
• number plates,
  
• and windows.
  
  Windscreen Wipers
  Check the windscreen wiper blades for:
  
• wear,
  
• damage,
  
• and proper condition.
  
• The wiper blades should be lifted away from the windscreen during inspection where applicable.
  
  Licence Disc
  
• Ensure that:
  
• the licence disc is valid,
  
• clearly visible,
  
• and correctly displayed.
  
  Wheels and Tyres
  Inspect all wheels and tyres for:
  
• sufficient tread depth,
  
• correct inflation,
  
• secure valve caps,
  
• oil or grease leaks,
  
• and secure wheel nuts.
  
  Engine Compartment Checks
  You should mention to the examiner that the following components must also be checked:
  
• engine oil,
  
• water level,
  
• brake fluid,
  
• and fan belts.
  
  Vehicle Body Inspection
  Ensure that all body parts are:
  
• secure,
  
• properly fitted,
  
• and free from damage.
  This includes:
  
• bonnet,
  
• bumpers,
  
• boot lid,
  
• and chevrons (where applicable).
  
  Emergency Equipment
  Mention that the following emergency items should be checked:
  
• spare wheel,
  
• jack,
  
• and wheel spanner.
  
  Fuel Cap Ensure that the fuel tank filler cap is:
• properly fitted,
  
• secure,
  
• and tightly closed.
  
  Important Reminder
  Throughout the inspection, it is important to clearly demonstrate to the examiner that you understand:
  
• vehicle safety,
  
• roadworthiness requirements,
  
• and the importance of identifying defects before driving on a public road.
