A flashing amber traffic light indicates that you may proceed through the intersection with caution.
Unlike a green light, a flashing amber signal does not give you automatic right of way.
You must:

  • Reduce speed if necessary

  • Give way to pedestrians crossing legally
  • Yield to vehicles already within or approaching the intersection
  • Proceed only when it is safe to do so

    A steady amber traffic light warns drivers that the traffic signal is about to change to red.
    When a steady amber light appears, the driver must prepare to stop and bring the vehicle to a smooth, controlled stop behind the stop line.
    However, if the vehicle is already so close to the stop line when the amber light appears that stopping safely may cause danger or result in harsh braking, the driver may proceed through the intersection with caution.
    A steady amber light should never be treated as a signal to accelerate through the intersection.
