Pre-Trip Inspection and Maneuvers

If you accumulate more than 50 penalty points, or commit any immediate-fail offence, you will fail Part 1 of the test.

Pre-Trip Inspection
The examiner will accompany you to your motorcycle, where you must carry out a complete pre-trip inspection.
  • If any minor defects are found, you may be given an opportunity to correct them.
  • A maximum of 5 minutes will be allowed to rectify such defects.
  • If any required item is not functioning, or the motorcycle is considered unroadworthy, the examiner will immediately fail you and terminate the test.

    Pre-Trip Inspection Checklist
    1. Check underneath the motorcycle for any leaks, fluid spills, or obstructions.

    2. Inspect the motorcycle in an anti-clockwise direction, starting at the top and working downwards, moving from left to right.

    3. Ensure all glass and plastic fittings are clean, secure, and undamaged, including:
  • Lights
  • Lenses
  • Reflectors
  • Mirrors
  • Number plate

    4. Confirm that the licence disc is valid and clearly displayed.

    5. Inspect the wheels and tyres for:
  • Adequate tyre tread depth
  • Damage or cuts
  • Correct inflation
  • Valve caps fitted
  • Oil leaks or grease contamination

    6. Check the brake discs, shock absorbers/forks, and mudguards for wear, damage, and security.

    7. Inspect the vehicle controls to ensure they are secure and functioning correctly, including:
  • Gear lever
  • Foot brake
  • Brake cables

    8. Check the engine oil, coolant, and brake fluid levels.

    9. Ensure all body components are secure and undamaged, including:
  • Footrests
  • Exhaust system
  • Fuel tank
  • Side covers
  • Chain guard
  • Seat
  • Fuel tank cap
  • Radiator
  • Windscreen
  • Fairings
  • Mudguards

    10. Verify that the chain is correctly adjusted and properly lubricated.

    11. Ensure the fuel tank cap is securely closed.

    12. State that the battery should be checked for:
  • Damage
  • Security
  • Fluid level (where applicable)

    Important Notes
    You will not be penalised for the following:
  • Failing to perform the inspection in an anti-clockwise direction.
  • Checking only one wheel and then referring to the other wheel.
  • Failing to inspect both sidewalls of a tyre for damage.
    However, following the correct inspection procedure is strongly recommended to demonstrate competence and thoroughness during the test.
